Burial Flags
An American flag is provided, at no cost, to honor the memory of a qualifying veteran's military service. The flag is presented to the next of kin or a close friend of the veteran.
What Is a Burial Flag?
A burial flag is an American flag provided by the federal government to drape the casket or accompany the urn of a qualifying veteran. After the service, the flag is folded and presented to the next of kin as a lasting symbol of the nation's gratitude for the veteran's service.
Who Is Eligible?
Veterans who served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces are generally eligible for a burial flag. This includes veterans of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard. Eligibility is determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
How to Request a Burial Flag
Burial flags are requested through the funeral home at the time of arrangement. Taps2's licensed funeral professionals are experienced in requesting burial flags on behalf of veteran families and will assist with this process.
Cremation and Burial Flags
A burial flag may be provided for a veteran whose remains are cremated. The flag is presented to the next of kin in the same manner as for a traditional burial.
Burial flags are a government benefit administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. They are not a Taps2 program. Taps2 provides educational information and professional assistance in requesting burial flags — it does not administer them.
