Cremated Remains & Veteran Cemeteries
Eligible veterans' cremated remains may be interred in VA national cemeteries and many state veterans cemeteries. Burial flags and other honors are available regardless of whether remains are cremated.
Cremated Remains in VA National Cemeteries
Eligible veterans' cremated remains may be interred in a VA national cemetery. Cremated remains may be buried in the ground or placed in a columbarium niche, depending on the cemetery's available space and facilities. The same eligibility requirements apply as for traditional burial.
Cremated Remains in State Veterans Cemeteries
Most state veterans cemeteries accept cremated remains for interment. Options may include in-ground burial or columbarium placement, depending on the facility. Eligibility requirements vary by state.
Burial Flags for Cremated Veterans
A burial flag may be provided for a veteran whose remains are cremated. The flag is presented to the next of kin in the same manner as for a traditional burial, as a lasting symbol of the nation's gratitude for the veteran's service.
Headstones and Markers for Cremated Veterans
Government-furnished headstones and markers, including niche markers, are available for eligible veterans whose cremated remains are interred in a cemetery. Eligibility is determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
VA national cemetery burial and related benefits are administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. They are not Taps2 programs. Eligibility is determined solely by the VA. Taps2 provides educational information and professional assistance — it does not administer VA benefits.
